STRUGGLE by community through literary efforts –II

Samuel Sargunar published a pamphlet titled “Dravida Kshathriya” and another one titled “Bishop Caldwell & the Thinnevelly Shanars” in which he explained the Shandrar terminology and Dravidia Kshathriya linkage of the community. Later on charges of publishing pamphlet against one Senthilnatha Iyer, he was imprisoned. He became a martyr among the community folk.

Sargunar highlighted the connection of Enadhinatha nayanar one of 63 apostles of Lord Siva to the community.

Y.Gnanamuthu Nadar also brought out through literary works on highlighting the Kshathriya status through article such as Shanars as Kshathriyas in May 19, 1883.

Corlenius Nadar, brought out a mythological literary work about the community titled Amarar Puranam went beyond Dravidia Kshathriya lineage to linkage to Vedic Gods.

The newspapers that were brought out for the community’s uplift and social welfare included

Vijaya Vihadan; Dakshina Dipam; Pandiya Kula dipam;

Dravida Abirami; Gnanodhayam; Sachithanandam;

Kodar Kulam; Nadar Nanban

“Shanar Characteristics” was widely published and the chief article was published in Madars Mail dated July12, 1899.

S.A.Muthu nadar with the support of Aruppukottai Nadar Education Association brought out Nadar kula mithran in 1910s and 1920s.

K.Shanmuga Gramani brought out the works on Shandrarakiya Surya Chandra Vamsa Paramparai Saritram (1889, Madras )

T.Vijaya Doraisamy Graminiar published the voluminous literary manual titled “Research on World Nadar” – A manual relating to the kingly community (1927). He was also instrumental in bringing out a monthly magazine called Kshathriya Mithran from Madras .

In 1910 Nabhi P.V.Pandion, Son of Sattampillai supported with literary proof for the higher status of Nadar community to Governmental authorities.

S.A.Siralinga Nadar published his article “Our People” in Kshathriya Mithran, VI (1925-26)

Ramalinga Gurukkal and V.A.Kumaraiya Nadar, brought the book on “the Nadar Kings and the Naicker Kings” (Thirumangalam & Virudhunagar – 1937)
