Toddy tapping became a near-forgotten craft after 1948, when Tamil Nadu responded to a plea by Mohandas Gandhi to save Indians-and their pay envelopes -from toddy.

Since 1920s Mohandas Gandhi was leading the struggle to ban toddy and arrack to save millions of common Indian livelihood.

In TamilNadu, the protest against toddy and arrack were spearheaded by starlwarts such as EVR Periyar, Rajagopalachary, Kamarajar, M.P.Sivagnana Graminiar whose father & brother had involved in toddy trade and various others.

In July 2006 the centenary celebrations of Sivagnanam was celebrated and a commemorative stamp was released in honour of the freedom fighter in August 2006. Tamils were indebted to him as it was through his efforts the State could retain Chennai and got Tiruttani from Andhra Pradesh.

Though he has not gone through schooling system, he had written over 100 books related to Tamil literary works.The State Government have teaken over the copyrights of the works by freedom fighter M.P. Sivagnanam, popularly known as Ma.Po.Si, and compensated his family.

His son M.P.S.Thirunavukkarasu founded Gramani Kula Sandror Welfare Association functioning from Korattur, Chennai in the year 1985.

The Silver Jubilee celebrations of Gramani Kula Sandror Welfare Association is celebrated on 10 January, 2010 with the support of Pudhucherry Sandror Kula Gramani Dharma Paribalana Sabha.

Gramani Kula Women association is being inagurated in this year 2010 at the inaguaral function being organized at Mandaveli, Chennai with the active participation of Community members.
