Freedom Fighter Tuticorin Ponnysamy Nadar

In the centenery celebrations of Freedom Fighter Tuticorin Ponnysamy nadar, in 2007 Krishnasswamy, the then president of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, released a special postal cover to commemorate the birth centenary celebrations of former MLA S. Ponnusamy Nadar at a function in Tuticorin. The cover was priced at Rs 5.

Mr. Krishnasswamy also released a souvenir on the life of Ponnysamy Nadar and unveiled his portrait.

Mr. Krishnasswamy recollected the services rendered by Ponnusamy Nadar, who got elected to the State Legislature from Tuticorin constituency in 1962, defeating K.R. Ramalingam of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

"We should replicate qualities such as honesty, humbleness and simplicity he possessed," Mr. Krishnasswamy said.

He also spoke on how Ponnusamy Nadar got inspired by Netaji Subash Chandra Bose and joined the freedom movement.

In 1942, during Autust Revolution, Ponnyusamy Nadar spoke at the public gathering at Tuticorin regarding the speech made by Netaji Subash Chandra Bose at Berlin through Radio for the independance of India. Inspired the speech, Ponnusamy Nadar he mentioned about this to the crowd. For this reason the then British government cancelled his license to own the radio and jailed him.

"Till his tragic death in a car accident in 1968, Ponnysamy Nadar was actively involved in welfare activities," Mr. Krishnasswamy said.

Tuticorin was a Congress bastion in the first three Assembly polls starting 1951, till the DMK's M.S. Sivasamy defeated party nominee Ponnusamy Nadar by 14,658 votes in 1967.
