CULTURAL TRANSFORMATION OF NADAR COMMUNITY - I

NADAR is a magical, mystical and legendary title which united several sub sects of related communities under one umbrella who were highly ambitious to develop culturally clean habits with eastern ideologies. The most unifying claim made was Sandror tribe (or noble men of villages) or Sathiriya Warrior Tribe Clan Lineage with allegiance to royal race belonging to “Son of Sun” ie, SuryaVamsham. They claim was to return as Sathiriya or Sathiriya Nadar in Census records from 1871 to 1911, however later census official rejected Sathiriya as it was more generic and royal title Nadar was accepted legally.

The legendary title Nadar was not in official records till 1921 and was created in records due to cultural caste fusion and proof shown by the community to legal authorities that the community has abandoned their traditional Palm related occupation and changed over to agriculture and mercantilism.

In the previous period their forefathers called as Shanars have, as a class, from time immemorial, been devoted to the cultivation of the palmyra palm, and to the collection of the juice, and manufacture of liquor from it. They framed the philosophy that the title Shanar or sanar is shortly derived from the Shandravar or Shandrar or Shandror who formed the governing councils of various villages of yester years during Chera, Chola and Pandya Dynasity.

According to Legends, Shanars are called Kaali Puthirar (the sons of Kaali or Bhadrakali,), and this goddess is considered as their tutelary deity.

In recent past, Shanars were also treated as untouchbles and even sometimes as the worst category ie unseeables.

According to the Thirunelvel Dakshina Mara Nadar Sangam, "The Nadars who until the last quarter of the 19th century were known as 'Shanas' or 'Shanars' were originally based in the two southernmost districts of Tamilnadu namely Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari.
